Acrylic nails. Can you paint your pattern or design on the tips first, then stick them on and then carry on.?

Im gettin an acrylic nail kit and system for christmas and I want to know some thigns before I start doing them. I would find it so much easier if I could paint all 10 tips (using acyrlic nail paint) first, letting them dry, then sticking them on and then applying the acrylic powder and liquid etc. Or would they be ruined if you stuck them on and then filed them? Would it scratch off the paint?
