Could you get acrylic nails without them filing down your nail?

i want to get acrylics for prom but my nails are still ruined from the last time i got them (theyve grown out a lot but stilll). could you ask them to not file them down first or will the nail not stick as well?Could you get acrylic nails without them filing down your nail?
You need them to be filed for either acrylic, or gels. BUT, these so-called 'techs' at the discount salons will tell you that they need to 'roughen up' your nail for the acrylic to adhere. This is not true. They use a drill on your nails for one reason only - speed of the nail service. They want you in and out the door as fast as possible. The only thing that needs to be done is to have your nails gently hand filed with a 240 grit buffer in one direction only to remove the surface shine, and nothing more than that. The acrylic or gel will adhere just fine using this method. The use of a drill with a sanding band will destroy your nails when not used correctly, and not many techs can do it right. Don't let someone do that to you.


And the statement about gels being less damaging is not true. Both gel, AND acrylic will do some damage to your nail after wearing them for an extended period.However, if you go to a highly skilled, and experienced tech then the damage can be minimized, especially if the tech uses nothing but top of the line acrylic and/or gel products. Avoid the discount salons at all costs. They most often will ruin your nails the very first visit there, and continue to do so each time you go back for a fill, or a rebalance. Gel nails are often more natural looking, as long as you are getting 'real' gel nails. But, a good tech using high quality products can make a set of acrylic nails look every bit as 'real' as gel. It just takes some skill on the techs part, but it can be done. I do it often myself. Some say that acrylics look so fake and ugly. Yeah, they do - IF you go to a discount salon where they use the cheapest products available on you. And they usually do exactly that. So, of course they look fake and ugly, and must be covered with polish to hide the ugliness of them. Take the polish off and the nail is usually really bad looking. Not realistic at all. But, you get what you pay for. Watch out for a common scam which is pulled by many discount salons where you go in and ask for gel nails. They will apply acrylic nails on you, then apply a UV gel topcoat and call them gel nails. Then they charge you the higher price for gel nails too. In short, people who have this done to them have been scammed. Those are NOT gel nails, they are acrylic nails with a UV gel topcoat. That is NOT the same thing as gel nails. The application of gel nails NEVER involve the use of a liquid and a powder. Gel is never a powder - ever. Gel is as the name implies - gel. Make sure you are getting the real thing if you get gel nails. Also, traditional UV gel nails are not soakable as acrylic nails are. They must be filed off - very carefully. And expect the price to be higher than acrylics. Never expect to pay less than $40 for a set of acrylics, or gels. If you do, you are asking for trouble because you are entering discount salon territory. The average price for a no frills acrylic full set in the U.S. is $48. Expect gels to cost anywhere from $45-$85 for a full set. I've even seen it a bit higher in some salons. But, don't let that discourage you. Like I said, you get what you pay for. Basically, it comes down to personal preference. There are advantages, and disadvantages to both acrylic nails, and gel nails. The tech should be able to fully exlain - in plain english, what the differences are. If they cannot fully AND thoroughly explain the differences, and the advantages/disadvantages of both, then you are in the wrong salon - and I would go elsewhere if I were you. A tech who is not able to answer any and all of your questions/concerns to your satisfaction is a sure sign of an inexperienced, and unskilled tech.Could you get acrylic nails without them filing down your nail?

Don't go to a budget nail salon. They trash your nails.





Gel is no more damaging than acrylic. What's damaging is the nail tech and their technique. If you choose a qualitly salon with a professional nail tech then your damage is minimal.

They do need to file your nail to remove the shine and decease your nail.When I do a fullset of nails I use a 180 file and lightly buff you don't need alot of pressure to remove the shine on your nails. This will go for the same a gel nails. I don't use a drill to prep the nails because it does not need alot of pressure. If I was you what I would do is to go around and check some nail salons in your area and talk to them and find out the way they prep nails. Find a nail tech that will care about your nails as much as you do, because there are some techs that get you in and out and only do what they want. I hope this helps.
You have to get them filed, the nail will fall of in a matter of days maybe hours, good luck!

Unfortunately your nails have to be filed in order for the acrylics to stick. Also make sure the tech doesn't drill your nails as this is also a common practice which is very damaging.





I agree with the answer about the gel nails. They are much less harmful and look more natural. Most places charge the same price for gels (or a little more...say $10.00) as for acrylics.
